This is a small shop of 60sq.m. located in a typical Athenian residential complex of the 70s. The main area is on the ground floor, while there is additional storage place at the mezzanine and the underground level. Its geometric features are the narrow width, the significant depth and its double height. The façade is fully made of glass with metal frames, adjoined by a system of security railing. It is a typical combination in small shops of the period.
The abandoned envelope was reused with the minimum intervention and the maximum use of the original materials. The ceramic tiles of an intermediated renovation were removed, revealing the initial terrazzo floor. An incomplete staircase that was later added was also reused in its original untreated form, with only the addition of grill steps. Adopting the same principle, the glass façade remained intact.
There are only three additions to the interior; A long counter was built, also made of untreated metal, following the materiality of the staircase. It was positioned in the middle of the shop, as a continuation of the circular stair that leads to the underground level. The changing room was placed under the mezzanine, at the area where the width of the store furtherly narrows. The zone was underlined by the use of a curtain and was vertically expanded to cover the double height. Both the shape of the curtain and the counter conclude to a semicircle, creating a dialogue of geometry within the interior. The third design element are the big scale hanging illuminated letters. They serve a double purpose, to be the main lighting feature of the store and at the same time to act as the central sign, the reference point of the façade.
Placing the luminous branding feature inside the store, preserving the existing glass façade and avoiding any exterior addition, we remain faithful to our principle to respect the envelope in which the shop is inscribed. Any intervention happens within the structural elements of the building so that the individual property does not dominate over the general whole.
